Most Anticipated of 2016 II | Movies

2016 is a year where a lot of movies are being released. A lot is kind of an understatement really. From all these I’ve picked 20 movies that I’m excited about seeing in theatres. I have already done a first part with ten of them and here’s the second part of the list. I am really looking forward to all of these, because of their awesome trailers, plots or, if they are a sequel, the first movie in that series. Some of these don’t have trailers or posters, so I’ll add some concept art instead. These are in no particular order, because I’m excited about all of them and didn’t wan’t to pick any favourites.

(Again, you can click on the title to go watch the trailer, if there is one)

Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeMarch 25thBatman v Superman
Not a real surprise I guess… This sequel to Man of Steel let’s Superman go face to face with Batman and that’s something I wouldn’t want to miss, even though I haven’t read any of their comics yet. It seems like an interesting confrontation and Wonder Woman and Aquaman are showing up too so it couldn’t get any better.
I don’t quite know how to feel about Jessie Eisenberg’s Luthor, but I’ll deal with that when I’m watching it. Man of Steel was alright, not my favourite movie ever, but not bad either.

The Angry Birds Movie – May 20thThe Angry Birds Movie
Who wasn’t addicted to this mobile game? Seriously, almost everyone I know has played this game. So I’m kind of curious to see how they’ll get these characters entertaining to watch in a movie. Sure, they have done a sort of television series inside their apps, but these were just drawn cartoons and the birds didn’t even speak. At first I was cynical about how they look in the movie, but since the trailer I have accepted their appearance. I’m also still not sure whether or not this is just for children, but I did like the Surprise Party gag in the trailer.

Alice Through the Looking GlassAlice Through the Looking Glass – May 27th
The movie that started all the live action remakes is getting a sequel. I really enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and I’m excited to see how this series will continue. It’s a bummer that Tim Burton is no longer directing, but his style is still present in this sequel (as seen in the trailer). The main cast is returning in addition of Sacha Baron Cohen as Time and an amazing voice cast for all the other diverse characters (including the last performance of Alan Rickman as the Blue Caterpillar). I’m especially looking forward to seeing the Mad Hatter again, as that was by far my favourite character.

The Girl on the Train – October 7th
A thriller about a girl who gets involved in a murder mystery with a family she sees everyday through the window of the train. This plot does get me interested for sure.
I’ll be reading the book by Paula Hawkins soon, so I’ll probably want to go see how they’ll interpret the story on screen. A cast including Emily Blunt, Laura Prepon, Luke Evans, Lisa Kudrow, Justin Theroux and many others, get me even more excited.

Doctor Strange – November 4th
Following Captain America: Civil War is a movie about Doctor Strange. I haven’t read any of his comics yet, but I’m really looking forward to read his new series. There isn’t much known about this movie thus far, but we do know that Benedict Cumberbatch is starring as the titular role and Marvel also released some amazing concept art (here, here and here). I can’t wait to see how this movie turns out and in anticipation of the movie I’ll try to read some of his comics.Doctor Strange

The BFG – July 1st
The Big Friendly Giant, a book by Roald Dahl, being made into a movie and directed by Steven Spielberg? I’m sold. I’m even more sold on the trailer. Seriously, I’m intrigued. It’s mysterious, it features a giant hand from a more giant man and feels like the perfect movie to watch with the entire family around Christmas (even though it comes out in July). Also Bill Hader, who I think is hilarious, is starring in the movie, so that’s one reason more to go see it.

Assassin’s Creed – December 21stAssassin's Creed II
In the first part of my list, I talked about Warcraft perhaps being the first great adaptation of a video game. Then I hope that this movie will be the second successful one. I’m a big fan of these games and really enjoy playing them. AC is having Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard teaming up once again after Macbeth. Fassbender is playing both a modern-day character as well as his own ancestor. The movie probably won’t be as violent as the game, but I’m guessing it will be as thrilling and grand.

Now You See Me II – June 10thNow You See Me II
The first movie in this series was kind of surprising for me. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. The magic, the acting performances and just the general story were great. I honestly didn’t predict the twist at the end, which made it that much better. I’m curious to see where they’ll take this story next and there are already plans to make a third one.
I’m sad that Isla Fisher won’t be reprising her role (due to her pregnancy), but Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzie Caplan will be joining the rest of the cast and they look great in the trailer. Definitely worth a watch.

X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27thX-Men Apocalypse
Apocalypse is the ninth movie in the X-Men franchise and serves as the final part in a trilogy/arc. Directed once again by Brian Singer and starring the younger X-Men. In addition, we also get some new X-Men as well as a big and powerful villain.
There was a bit of critique about how Apocalypse looks in the movie, but from what I’ve seen in the trailer I think he can cause a lot of destruction in the world of the X-Men. That trailer looks quite menacing as well. I have yet to see Days of Future Past, but I’m certain I will get to it before this one comes out.

Moana – November 23rdMoana II
I probably have too many Disney movies on my list, but who cares. Moana is the next animation movie by Disney and is supposed to be the new Frozen. Even though I haven’t seen that and don’t want to either (I’m sorry, it just doesn’t appeal to me), I do want to go and see this one. It features a confident young woman and a demi-God voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who set sail to a fabled island. This appears to be an exciting and beautiful movie (here‘s some concept art), which will bring a bit more diversity to the Disney franchise.

This concludes my list of top 20 movies I definitely want to go see in 2016. I do want to mention that I intently left the Star Wars and Star Trek movies out of my list, because I still haven’t watched any of the previous movies in these franchises (though I am planning to do some marathons soon), so I felt it would be unfair to include that one on my list. That aside, are there any movies that you want to go see that aren’t on my list?
I’ll see you later!

  1. Really? -.- An angry birds movie? Apparently Hollywood screen writers are hard up for plots. Jeez. Send ’em my way! I got plenty of plots that’d be better than that. *sigh*

Though, I must say that I’m quite excited for Moana! It looks really cool and who doesn’t love a good animation? (That isn’t angry birds. -.-)

Aaaand… X-MEN! HECK YEAH! I’m such an X-men fan that I’m WAY excited about this.

What?! Now You See Me 2? Hm… I’m a little reserved about that because I don’t see how they’d make a sequel to the first movie (which was quite good).

    1. I think the Angry Birds one will be a hit-or-miss kind of movie. Either we’ll all love it or it’ll just be another one in a dozen. Moana looks really good, I’m waiting for the trailer to see if it’ll be an interesting story, but I have my hopes up!
Of course the X-Men are on my list. The original trilogie was okay, Origins Wolverine wasn’t and the new movies are absolutely amazing. Definitely exciting for the next one.
They left the first one kind of open-ended (well not really, but it was intently left open for a sequel). The trailer got me excited and if I have to be honest, if it has good magic and a decent plot, I’ll probably like it 😁

      1. I actually quite enjoyed Wolverine’s origins movie, but I personally liked the world-building behind it: like how he got metal claws, why he has amnesia, and of course when you see the younger versions of the other X-men. Meh. To each their own. ^.^

Huh. I guess I didn’t get an open-ended feeling from Now You See Me, but I guess thinking back on it, it could be. I just saw it more as a: ‘they got what they wanted, movies over’ kind of thing. Should be interesting, though, especially if it’s another heist style. ^.^ It’s like the Oceans movies with magic. :p

      2. Maybe if I rewatch it I’ll like it a bit more, but from what I remember I didn’t really enjoy it that much. I wouldn’t call it a bad movie, just not really what I’d expected from it.
It didn’t quite have an open ending, but they did it in a way to make a sequel possible. The twist came rather late in the movie, so I was wondering how they would move on from that point on 🙂

  2. Batman V Superman is in my list too! And I’m adding right now Alice Through The Looking Glass, I didn’t know it’ll come out this year but now I want to watch it! I need to read The Girl On The Train before I watch the movie! And I need to watch the X Men movies, soon. 😀

  3. I had no idea that Alan Rickman was the voice of the Blue Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. I loved that movie and now I’m so looking forward to this next installment. I’m not a fan of superhero movies but I’m sure someday I’ll sit and watch all the DC and Marvel movies in a marathon. I’m so excited for Moana though! I still think there needs to be a Latina princess which they still haven’t done but Hawaiian is nice too

    1. I’m a big fan of superhero movies and especially Marvel, because their movies aren’t all the same genre. Even though your watching a Superhero movie, you still get either a political thriller or a sci-fi adventure or even a war story.
Disney desperately needs to create some diversity. Sure they have Pocahontas and Mulan, but these aren’t as popular as all the other characters. Though if Moana has the same fate as Frozen, I’m sure we’ll see some change in that soon.

      1. I feel like Mulan and Pocahontas were more for the older generation, so there needs to be some more diversity in newer movies. They’re still suitable for kids now but most of them want to see the ones coming out in theaters.

      2. I agree, they need to introduce some great new characters in upcoming movies, but I’m sure if Moana is successful they’ll try more so in the future. They’ve already planned Gigantic, which is set in Spain, though I’m not sure if they’ll include characters with a slightly darker skintone, but we’ll see when we get there. First we’ll have to wait and see how Moana does.

      3. I hope it does well and they keep the momentum going. I also want to see diversity in country, one of my new favorites is Brave and although they’re not POCs, they speak different and have different customs which is also great to share.

      4. Exactly, and speaking of Pixar, they are doing Coco which is a movie about the Day of the Dead starring a young Mexican boy with a big family. So that’ll probably add to that momentum I’m guessing 😁

  4. Great list! I should really do a list like this but it wouldn’t exactly fit my blog. I can’t wait for Moana, just for the diversity aspect. And I didn’t know Cumberbatch was going to be in a marvel film! That is definitely exciting. I’m also looking forward to Deadpool and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

    1. The concept art I’ve seen so far from Moana is beautiful. I think Benedict Cumberbatch is perfectly cast as Doctor Strange and I reckon he’ll do an amazing job portraying him.

  5. My top most anticipated from this list is definitely Now You See Me II. I’ve been waiting for it for the longest time given how much I enjoyed the first movie and tons of superhero movies which I’m so excited about. It’s gonna be a great year with all these upcoming movies.

    1. Now You See Me was really a surprisingly good movie. And I can’t believe how many superhero movies we’re getting this year. I’m going to have to pay a weekly visit to the movie theather hahaha 😁

  6. Much like how I intended to read Gone Girl prior to viewing the adaptation (I didn’t), I’ll go into Girl on the Train with the same mindset (still probably won’t). But I do hope the adaptation is solid because I really did enjoy the former as a film. I really enjoyed the nuance of Blunt in Sicario so I hope she does the material one hell of a performance.

    1. I’m planning on reading both of these books before seeing the movie. I’m currently reading Girl on the Train in anticipation of the movie and I haven’t seen Gone Girl yet, so I have all the time I want to read the book 😁 Sicario wasn’t the best movie I’ve seen last year, but Emily Blunt was great and I’m excited to see how she will portray Rachel.
