Most Anticipated of 2016 II | Movies

2016 is a year where a lot of movies are being released. A lot is kind of an understatement really. From all these I’ve picked 20 movies that I’m excited about seeing in theatres. I have already done a first part with ten of them and here’s the second part of the list. I am really looking forward to all of these, because of their awesome trailers, plots or, if they are a sequel, the first movie in that series. Some of these don’t have trailers or posters, so I’ll add some concept art instead. These are in no particular order, because I’m excited about all of them and didn’t wan’t to pick any favourites.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25th
Not a real surprise I guess… This sequel to Man of Steel let’s Superman go face to face with Batman and that’s something I wouldn’t want to miss, even though I haven’t read any of their comics yet. It seems like an interesting confrontation and Wonder Woman and Aquaman are showing up too so it couldn’t get any better.
I don’t quite know how to feel about Jessie Eisenberg’s Luthor, but I’ll deal with that when I’m watching it. Man of Steel was alright, not my favourite movie ever, but not bad either.

The Angry Birds Movie – May 20th
Who wasn’t addicted to this mobile game? Seriously, almost everyone I know has played this game. So I’m kind of curious to see how they’ll get these characters entertaining to watch in a movie. Sure, they have done a sort of television series inside their apps, but these were just drawn cartoons and the birds didn’t even speak. At first I was cynical about how they look in the movie, but since the trailer I have accepted their appearance. I’m also still not sure whether or not this is just for children, but I did like the Surprise Party gag in the trailer.

Alice Through the Looking Glass – May 27th
The movie that started all the live action remakes is getting a sequel. I really enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and I’m excited to see how this series will continue. It’s a bummer that Tim Burton is no longer directing, but his style is still present in this sequel (as seen in the trailer). The main cast is returning in addition of Sacha Baron Cohen as Time and an amazing voice cast for all the other diverse characters (including the last performance of Alan Rickman as the Blue Caterpillar). I’m especially looking forward to seeing the Mad Hatter again, as that was by far my favourite character.

The Girl on the Train – October 7th
A thriller about a girl who gets involved in a murder mystery with a family she sees everyday through the window of the train. This plot does get me interested for sure.
I’ll be reading the book by Paula Hawkins soon, so I’ll probably want to go see how they’ll interpret the story on screen. A cast including Emily Blunt, Laura Prepon, Luke Evans, Lisa Kudrow, Justin Theroux and many others, get me even more excited.

Doctor Strange – November 4th
Following Captain America: Civil War is a movie about Doctor Strange. I haven’t read any of his comics yet, but I’m really looking forward to read his new series. There isn’t much known about this movie thus far, but we do know that Benedict Cumberbatch is starring as the titular role and Marvel also released some amazing concept art (here, here and here). I can’t wait to see how this movie turns out and in anticipation of the movie I’ll try to read some of his comics.

The BFG – July 1st
The Big Friendly Giant, a book by Roald Dahl, being made into a movie and directed by Steven Spielberg? I’m sold. I’m even more sold on the trailer. Seriously, I’m intrigued. It’s mysterious, it features a giant hand from a more giant man and feels like the perfect movie to watch with the entire family around Christmas (even though it comes out in July). Also Bill Hader, who I think is hilarious, is starring in the movie, so that’s one reason more to go see it.

Assassin’s Creed – December 21st
In the first part of my list, I talked about Warcraft perhaps being the first great adaptation of a video game. Then I hope that this movie will be the second successful one. I’m a big fan of these games and really enjoy playing them. AC is having Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard teaming up once again after Macbeth. Fassbender is playing both a modern-day character as well as his own ancestor. The movie probably won’t be as violent as the game, but I’m guessing it will be as thrilling and grand.

Now You See Me II – June 10th
The first movie in this series was kind of surprising for me. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. The magic, the acting performances and just the general story were great. I honestly didn’t predict the twist at the end, which made it that much better. I’m curious to see where they’ll take this story next and there are already plans to make a third one.
I’m sad that Isla Fisher won’t be reprising her role (due to her pregnancy), but Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzie Caplan will be joining the rest of the cast and they look great in the trailer. Definitely worth a watch.

X-Men: Apocalypse – May 27th
Apocalypse is the ninth movie in the X-Men franchise and serves as the final part in a trilogy/arc. Directed once again by Brian Singer and starring the younger X-Men. In addition, we also get some new X-Men as well as a big and powerful villain.
There was a bit of critique about how Apocalypse looks in the movie, but from what I’ve seen in the trailer I think he can cause a lot of destruction in the world of the X-Men. That trailer looks quite menacing as well. I have yet to see Days of Future Past, but I’m certain I will get to it before this one comes out.

Moana – November 23rd
I probably have too many Disney movies on my list, but who cares. Moana is the next animation movie by Disney and is supposed to be the new Frozen. Even though I haven’t seen that and don’t want to either (I’m sorry, it just doesn’t appeal to me), I do want to go and see this one. It features a confident young woman and a demi-God voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who set sail to a fabled island. This appears to be an exciting and beautiful movie (here‘s some concept art), which will bring a bit more diversity to the Disney franchise.

This concludes my list of top 20 movies I definitely want to go see in 2016. I do want to mention that I intently left the Star Wars and Star Trek movies out of my list, because I still haven’t watched any of the previous movies in these franchises (though I am planning to do some marathons soon), so I felt it would be unfair to include that one on my list. That aside, are there any movies that you want to go see that aren’t on my list?
