Childhood Fandoms

Ever since I was a kid I was part of several fandoms. Not in the way that I would rave about it with others, but I did collect a lot of toys or books or anything else that was part of the merchandising. As I was recollecting memories from my childhood I can say that I’ve been part of five major fandoms. That is to say that these are the main ones, as I was a fan of a lot of things. Though if I would include all of those into this post, I could go on forever.

Bob the Builder
If you don’t believe everything is possible, then you don’t know Bob the Builder. He can build everything you want and fix all that is broken. As a kid, this series was amazing. It had a sympathetic and reliable main character and several other characters, in this case vehicles, who each had a different personality that added to a whole. What now seems like a simple, and silly to be honest, series was something great to watch when I was young.

Playmobil
For anyone who might have been a big fan of LEGO, I’m going to have to disappoint you. I never really owned any LEGO. Instead, I used to play a lot with its counterpart Playmobil. While often being seen as sort of the same, Playmobil didn’t rely as much on the building part. Instead of having to build things with small bricks, here you often had finished sets that came right out of the box. While this being easy and quick, it couldn’t really offer the freedom in creativity that LEGO did. However, I did have a lot of fun with creating entire worlds, which often consisted of a randomly placed house and some props next to it. As a kid this was extremely fun to play with.

Spongebob Squarepants
That annoying yellow sponge. I’m pretty sure everyone knows this one and might even have watched it.  Though he did was annoying and it wasn’t really realistic, I still liked that show quite a lot. There was something about it that got me hooked. Perhaps it was the overall sense of fun or the likeable characters. As you can see from the image above, I own a rather big Spongebob toy which I got from my sister. Besides that, I owned books, games and lots of other stuff Spongebob-related. I couldn’t get enough of it.

Geronimo Stilton
I am the proud owner of 72 Geronimo Stilton-themed books. I’m saying themed, because half of these are spin-offs and others. That’s right, only 36 books are of the main series with the titular mouse as hero. When you’re young, these books are great reads, because they often have a lot of action and good story elements, great characters and fun fonts and images to support the story. The people at the bookstore even knew me and immediately pointed out if there was a new book released. It even went so far that they arranged an interview with Geronimo Stilton (or a guy in a suit) at this large book-expo in Belgium.

Marvel fandom.jpgMarvel
This one’s not really a childhood fandom, as I’m a fan right now, but this is a pretty major one. You probably will have seen my Marvel comic collection by now and I’m pretty fond of it. I’m always thinking of buying new ones, due to budgetary reasons that’s not always reasons. I first started reading comics a couple of years ago, after seeing the Iron Man movies. Since then, I’ve assembled a small collection. I’ve seen every Marvel-movie thus far and own almost all of the released ones, except The Incredible Hulk and the new Ant-Man. I could go on all day about how great I think Marvel is, but that wouldn’t be interesting (or who knows I might even write an entire post about it).

These are five fandoms that were a big part of my childhood, even now in case of Marvel. These weren’t the only fandoms, but they were the most prominent ones. It’s fun looking back at the things you loved when you were a child. Let me know in the comments if you were part of any of these. Also add what other fandoms you were part of when you were young. Or even write your own post with your childhood fandoms and make sure to link it back to me, because I think that’s really interesting and to see if there are a lot of differences.
I’ll see you later!

    1. Yes indeed and they’ve recently redesigned everything about the series to give it a more modern look. I’m not sure how I feel about it as I’m accustomed to their original designs, but I guess it’s better for children nowadays. And they added Leo, who is a POC, so that’s a good thing as well.

  1. I watched Bob the Builder too!! Though I always prefered and still prefer Spongebob Squarepants. The other two I have never heard of them, I think…
I’m getting slowly into the Marvel world but I’m really behind 😂

    1. Those two series really were my favourites for a long time. Bob the Builder was more something i watched when I was little and Spongebob came when I got slightly older.
As far as the Marvel movies, I’m up-to-date. But I’m way behind with the comics. Like way way behind. Though I am trying to catch up as fast as I can!

  3. I use to wake up very early on weekends when I was a kid and watch Bob the Builder. I don’t know why it’s so early and it’s on the weekends and I don’t know why I love that show. I use to sing at the songs they sang. God, if you can see me then, I look like a fool hahaha
