So I finally went to see Deadpool a couple of days ago. It’s long overdue since it came out more than a month ago. Even the cashier at the movie theater didn’t believe we were this late to watch the movie. My sister knows her, so she wasn’t being rude or something and she had a point. For being a big fan of superhero movies and Marvel in general, it did take me a while to go watch this. Now that I’ve finally seen Deadpool I have to admit, I don’t really know how I feel about it. It was exactly what I expected it was going to be, but it also wasn’t entirely that. I’m making no sense at all, am I? Let me explain.

First of all, let me just say that I did really enjoy this movie. I laughed out loud quite a lot and I liked this version of Deadpool way better than in the Wolverine movie.
When they announced it was going to be an R-rated movie, I thought they were going to go too far. That they were just going to put R-rated stuff in there just for the sake of having it. Though I was mistaken. I thought the movie had just the right amount of jokes and funny bits. Ryan Reynolds did a good job at delivering those jokes at the right moment. Even the breaking of the 4th wall didn’t seem out of place. I didn’t have the feeling that they went too far as to what they said and showed (though the kid who sat in front of me was still way too young). I do hope they are going to use Morena Baccarin more in the sequel, as I thought she didn’t fully got to show what she can do as an actress.
I did also really like his sidekicks, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, especially the latter. I didn’t know a lot about the character, but now that I’ve seen the movie, I would really like to see her in action even more.

Now aside from all that, I do have some problems with this movie. The villains kind of bothered me. While they did come across as some menacing people who can really kick some ass, we didn’t get any background information nor character depth. There’s no reasoning given behind their doings. Ajax, the actual main villain, was portrayed well by Ed Skrein, but he could have used some more time on-screen to show actual character development instead of just being grumpy and fighting Deadpool. His sidekick, who apparently is called Angel Dust, had nothing more to do than being brutal and aggressive. She doesn’t speak that often and is only their to fight.

The second thing that annoyed me for a little bit was the story. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good story and it consisted of a few strong points, like dealing with cancer and being a superhero. Though it was just a bit too simple for me. There wasn’t much to it. The first half of the story was all about how the relationship of Wade and Vanessa evolved and how they react to him having cancer. I thought this was a good start for the movie. A proper origin story to fully get to know the character. Now the second part of the movie was less good, to my opinion. When it fully turned into the superhero genre, as in the first part we also got a bit of drama. We were treated with the same-old story of a loved one getting kidnapped and our hero, or in this case anti-hero, doing everything he can to go and save him or her. It turned out okay, but it’s not the most original story they could have told.
What also bothered me for a bit was the final battle. I thought it was a bit lacklustre when comparing it to the first fight scene on the highway. That scene was so great that it kind of set a standard for the entire movie and I feel like the rest didn’t exactly live up to that standard.

Don’t get fooled by the length of the negative paragraphs considering I only have one positive paragraph, because I did really enjoy this movie and I’m glad we finally got a decent portrayal of Deadpool. I’m looking forward to the already announced sequel to see how this will progress.
